New Zealand yams

Got a few of these little things, any ideas?
So far had them roasted, they are a bit potatoey with a acid/citrus edge.

Btw they are australian grown ones; just another thing we're nicking from the kiwis

Re: New Zealand yams

Aren't they cute!
I think I have seen them at the veggie market. I will look out for them now!
This was in the thing I looked up:

"Oca uses are similar to a potato i.e. oca can be boiled, baked or fried. In Mexico, oca is commonly sprinkled with salt, lemon and hot pepper and eaten raw. It is also made into pickles with vinegar. In the Andes, the tubers are placed in the sun for a few days, to sweeten them. The leaves can be eaten as a sorrel substitute. Oca can also be used as a pig forage, tubers and foliage are relished by pigs."

The Kiwi's nicked them from the Andes before we nicked them from them! wink

I wonder if they are related to my cambodian herb that has sorrel tasting leaves and little golden tubers? (More carrot shaped though!)

Re: New Zealand yams

Yams grow all year round - like potatoes.
But don't expect them to be sold in the flash supermarkets.
Your best chance of purchase is at your local farmer's markets.
