Re: favorite colorful expressions

There are zillions of sayings...

den Teufel mit dem Beelzebub austreiben (to drive out the devil with the beelzebub - to replace one evil with another just as bad)

Gänsewein (goose wine/wine for geese - refers to water)

Kraneberger ("Kran" is the water tap - makes it sound like natural mineral water from a fictive place/source, but really is tap water)

Das ist doch zum Mäuse melken! (That makes you milk mice! - well, just try to fit a bucket under a mouse to milk it and you'll know that it is an expression of frustration....)

Da möchte ich nicht tot über den Gartenzaun hängen. (There/In that place I don't want to hang dead over the garden fence - the place is so lonely you don't want to live there/if you die there (and fall halfway over the fence no one - not even the next door neighbor will find you))

Da sagen sich Fuchs und Hase "Gute Nacht!" (There fox and hare say "Good Night" to each other - this place is so lonely that even fox and hare ...)

Klappe zu - Affe tot (lid shut - monkey dead.  - basically means "basta". )

.....

One eye, One ear, One Arsehole...      his theory on what you need  need to get thru life.. lol

If it ain't broke, don't fix it = leave things alone

A face like a bag of spanners = not very attractive looking (same meaning as face like a robber's dog)

p.s. spanner = wrench in the US

Sandwich short of a loaf        or        Kangaroos in the top paddock.

Not quite the full quid, a bit bonkers....
