Re: Wood Fired Pizza Oven
Good morning. I have recently (last week) completed my wood burning oven and thus have lots of information that you may need to construct your own. I also have a few bits & bobs to give away (collect only) left over from my own build.
If you are interested in picking my brains, I will send you my flickr link which has a full set of construction photos from digging to cooking.
You are setting out on a great journey, good luck

Re: Wood Fired Pizza Oven
To anyone who's genuine about building a Pompeii style pizza oven for themselves, then, I would be more than pleased to discuss the do's and dont's. I built mine on a shoestring and cost me about £80 in total, using mostly reclaimed bricks. here's a couple of pics of the first firing.

Re: Wood Fired Pizza Oven
SINCE building my wood-oven I have joined and become an active member of the Forno Bravo forum (specialising in wood-oven building). Although I built my wood-oven correctly, I could have built-in more thermal qualities, improving the oven's performance especially in bread baking. So I am thinking of re-building the dome.
The problem is sourcing the materials here in the U.K. FB UK do sell pre-fab and kit ovens but only have a limited stock of basic building materials.I have found 2 suppliers of fire-brick here in the U.K but so far they hav'nt returned my e-mail enquiries. I have also searched for a U.K site with the names of suppliers throuout the country, but have had no luck.
Therefore I have created a site purely as a reference guide to any would-be wood-oven builders. If there are any J.O forum members with any names of suppliers or any other relevent info that I could use then I would be truly grateful.
The site is not for advertising but created as a reference guide for people in the U.K to use. Here's the link

Re: Wood Fired Pizza Oven
I have just completed construction of a wood fired oven in my backyard. You will find the whole excersize to be quite enjoyable, providing you do your research properly and you use the correct materials! I used refractory concrete reinforced with stainless steel needles for the dome, (if you use normal steel for the reinforcing of the dome it can expand with the heat and cause cracking) and refractory tiles for the floor and skirt, for the main structure of the oven. Then for the insulation I encased the dome with 2 layers of ceramic wool (50mm thick in total) covered by a 100mm thick layer of vermiculite/cement mix. It heats up quite easily to 400C'. I haven't had the chance to go any hotter yet but apparently the refractory materials are rated to 1600C'.
I live in Melbourne Australia and got all my materials from a company in Mulgrave. Their web address is www.refractoryandceramic.com.au
If you build it yourself you will do it for about half the price of one supplied by someone else. I spent approx $1000AUS.
Well worth the money. The first meal I cooked was roast lamb with garlic and rosemary! YUMMO!
Hope I've been a help,
Scott ![]()

Re: Wood Fired Pizza Oven
Thank you JoyYamDaisy,
One thing I forgot to mention in the last post is to try searching 'Google images' for wood fired ovens if your not to sure on a design you want to go with. Just out of curiosity
JoyYamDaisy where in Melbourne are you. I'm in South Morang!
Cheers

Congrat's on your wood-oven build. It's true what you say about finding the correct materials for the job. Unfortunately here in the UK finding refractory materials are not so easy to find.
Did you know that Rado Hand of Traditional oven in Australia has an interactive forum? here's the link....

Nice to hear that the Brits are still managing to find the correct materials here in the UK. Would you be so kind as to pass on where you bought your refractory products from, so I can pass that info on to others hoping to complete their build this year. It would also be nice if any of you could show a photo of your wood-oven here on JO forum.
Many thanks
Terry
