I have seen some marvelous strawberry farms in SW France where they grow them in hanging containers. Perhaps if the hanging containers are strung on wire or clothes line strings, it might also help keep rabbits and squirrels off the plants.

Speaking of that, can slugs comunicate? Because the moment one of them shouts out "Hey guys - FREE BEER!" that garden's gonna be slime-central.
Copper's the best bet. A friend of mine had a huge snail problem (the problem was huge, not the snail
) in his orchard and put a copper band around every tree. For some reason it fascinates them, every morning he just goes around the bands and picks them off. He's also gotten really good at making escargot. Revenge is a dish best served with parsley-butter! ![]()

Well, hedgehogs will eat an occasional slug, but aren't realy crazy about them. They prefer beetles and catepilars.

Perhaps Serbian Hedgehogs have a smaller appetite than British Hedgehogs...

Well I can't speak for all of them, but the ones in my yard have quite a big apetite. Sadly, they prefer bullying cats and taking their food than acctually chasing bugs.
They are however a great way to get rid of snakes!

I must confess to you all now. I sometimes dress up in a slug outfit and hang around in gardens that serve free beer. There my secret is out.

Mummza,
I have never heard of that idea. Quite ingenious. I do find that bark chippings around a vegetable patch are quite hard for slugs and snails to traverse, or even used as a mulch amongst the plants. I'm also told that lemon or orange skins left inverted amidst your crops will collect them in a large number and you can then dispose of them as you will - preferably not into the neighbours garden.
