Rapeseed Oil
Why are all us British still using Olive Oil. I have swopped to British Rapeseed Oil. It is the same price, but has an amazing colour and flavour. I love it.

Re: Rapeseed Oil
Is there something wrong with olive oil? Are the British against olive oil for some reason?

Re: Rapeseed Oil
Rapeseed and canola oil i refuse to cook with, perhaps they have advantages elsewhere...i doubt it, they contain erucic acid, mustard oil with its high percentage of erucic acid has been banned in European union.
"rapeseed oil, which contains erucic acid, can cause increased lung carcinomas (cancer) through emissions under high heat"...
I'll continue to favourise olive oil for flavoring, walnut oil too. They though are both bad for health when heated.
Sunflower oil is the only one i trust to cook with.

Re: Rapeseed Oil
Levels of erucic acid in foods have been strictly controlled since the 1970s.
Rapeseed oil, sometimes labelled vegetable oil, is a healthy choice as it has less unhealthy saturated fat than all other cooking oils and fats and is high in beneficial monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats omega 3, 6 and 9

Re: Rapeseed Oil
I'm in Australia and most of the canola (rapeseed) grown here is genetically modified, so I won't touch it with a 10' barge pole.
I stick with olive oil - that hasn't been messed with yet, to my knowledge.

Re: Rapeseed Oil
yep.. canola is a low erucic acid variant of rapeseed . most canola is genetically modified to be resistant to roundup weedkiller but you can find organic canola/rapeseed if you try. It has high levels of omegas and is actually more heart healthy than just about any other oil .
http://www.presidentschoice.ca/LCLOnlin … ctId=10617
on a sidenote , it can have a fishy smell or taste for some people because of the high omega levels.

Re: Rapeseed Oil
The Canadians named Canola (The name "canola" was derived from "Canadian oil, low acid" in 1978) because rape oil sounded so bad (rapeseed is better!).

There is a court case going on in Australia where an organic farmer has lost his organic status because of GM canola contaminating his farm.
