Coleslaw is so easy to make.
Cabbage, either green or purple or both
Carrot
Onion
Just use equal parts of each, i make enough for two days. Slice the vegs and mix with home made mayonnaise.
You can also add apple. ![]()

Kye I love the idea of adding apple! ![]()
I also like to add a dash of acid, either citrus or vinegar infused with fig.

Re: american dishes
My coleslaws nearly always include apple (especially in the winter) though I also use pears, chopped apricots, orange segments, nuts etc..........I also don't use too much mayo.........just enough to bind all the other ingredients.
I find there is enough 'tang' from the mayo & the fruit to need citrus juice/vinegar.
(mind I usually make my own mayo too)

Re: american dishes
I am more partial to a acid based vinaigrette dressing for slaw than mayo or yogurt based one

Re: american dishes
When I make coleslaw as a salad I do get fancy and add apples or fennel etc. But when I'm making coleslaw for hot dogs I stick to simple and creamy dressing.
- cabbage
- mayo
- red wine vinegar
- celery salt
The whole purpose of adding slaw to a dog is for the cool creaminess to balance out the spicy chili. It works wonders.

Re: american dishes
Suggest adding grated celeriac. Or, grate it and just sprinkle on top of each serving.

Re: american dishes
Good idea Thisltedo , I like celeriac .depending on which of the family are home , I might have to halve the coleslaw and add it to some but not all as not all the family like celery or celariac

Or just celeriac alone dressed with mayo, a touch of good mustard and a splash of vinegar! ![]()

You have to watch the grated celeriac doesn't go brown before you've had a chance to include. Placing it in water with lemon should do the trick.

So now we've really moved past american food, lol. These fancy slaws are all nice and good but a hot dog needs some plain cabbage on it.
