Any one in the Uk who has seen the news/read a newspaper in the last 24 hours will almost certainly have come across this story...The "Beefburgers" contain up to 29% Horse meat...
I'm amazed

Does this mean those particular farmers are raising horses for meat?
Or are they putting down old, sick horses and using them for meat?

Tescos are a big supermarket chain over here, they source their "Value" range Burgers from a supplier in Ireland..No-one is quite sure how the Horse meat got in to the supply chain at the mo...
Nothing wrong with eating Horse-meat per-se, just that the Brits don't usually,(and are a bit squemish about it) unlike our Continental cousins... Kye?? are you a fan???

I think it's unethical, not to mention, why when a horse would probably take a lot more expense to raise and then, there is the issue of the meat not being safe. If you are buying meat from cattle ranchers, what are they doing, adding the meat from sick horses as a means of cutting costs. Scary! One of your papers states the horse meat came from two farms in Britain and one in Ireland.

It depends on what the horsemeat was intended for, & how it slipped into this particular chain that will be investigated.
It doesn't necessarily mean that the horsemeat was 'unfit for human consumption', but rather that it got into products it wasn't meant to without 'Health & Safety' or 'Food Standards' picking it up before it left the Processor.
There are issues with this on so many levels, without even looking at the 'Eww'-factor.
Note: Relying on information given by 'the Press' is also a no-no since most of them print in a sensationalist manner (& for whom the 'truth' is a far rarer creature than the dodo)...........no doubt more accurate info will appear over the next few days!

Yes, exactly. Not to mention, it is dishonest to call something a 'beef' burger when it is 30% horse.

Wasn't horse pink slime I hope
"The top eight countries consume about 4.7 million horses a year." wiki
Asda jumped on the shelve removal job too. Wonder how many other burger joints and shops get their patty products from that provider.

Re: Tesco "Value range" Beef burgers....
I said earlier that I make my own burgers and always have.
What I can't understand is why some shoppers buy what they think is a bargain in burgers, ie £1 for 5, or whatever and not be suspicious as to the content. Do they really think they're getting bargain? Very naive.
I also know, having lived in Devon for many years, that the Dartmoor ponies are shipped to France because of their liking for their meat. However, at least now the ponies are slaughtered in England BEFORE being put through the ordeal of being shipped across the channel.
