Set the biscuit tin aside and leave the scones for later, these ultimate homemade goodies are the stars of the show. From chocolate celebration cake to classic Victoria sponge, these are serious Mother’s Day treats, and there’s plenty to indulge in.

CHOCOLATE GALORE

Chocolate is everyone’s guilty pleasure. This dark, rich and melt-in-your-mouth epic chocolate and beetroot cake is second to none, and simple enough that the kids can get involved too. Or if you or your mum are vegan or gluten-intolerant, we’ve got cakes to cover that, too.

CITRUS HEAVEN

If it’s the zingy bakes your mother loves, Jamie’s Nan’s St. Clement’s cake could be just the ticket – with a lemon icing that seeps into the sponge, it keeps its flavour and texture for ages. Add poppy seeds and an almond sponge, and you have a citrussy almond cake, or if she’s more about tangy flavours, try this marmalade cake, with a light sponge and sticky orange glaze. Delicious!

OLD FAVOURITES

Sometimes the only thing that’ll do the job is a comfort classic. A slice of Jamie’s Queen Victoria sponge filled with raspberries and Jersey cream is a true British favourite. Or what about coffee and walnut or even lemon drizzle cake? To make this great old-fashioned tea cake as fresh and zingy as possible, try and buy thick-skinned organic lemons instead of the waxed and sprayed everyday variety. Whatever you choose, these are sure to put a smile on your mum’s face.

LAYER UP

Pull out all the stops with these epic cakes that really go that extra mile. Jamie’s hummingbird cake from his Comfort Food book is all about light, fluffy sponge with plenty of banana and pineapple, a crunchy dusting of pecan brittle, and a zesty cream cheese icing – it’s guaranteed to impress.

GO WITHOUT GLUTEN

For the gluten-avoiders, there’s no need for you or your mum to feel left out. From zingy orange and polenta cake, to deliciously spiced carrot cake, to moreish flourless chocolate cake, we’ve got bakes that tick all the boxes.
