Toffee Apples

Toffee Apples

PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN MAKING TOFFEE APPLES !! The mixture gets dangerously hot so don\'t be tempted to lick the mixture off the spoon otherwise you\'ll end up with a burnt mouth ! And I wouldn\'t recommend making these with young children either..just let them enjoy the end product :)

Ingredients
8 small apples (i used Golden Delicious)

2 cups white sugar

1/2 teaspoon white vinegar

1/2 cup water

1/2 teaspoon red food colouring (optional)

Method
1. Cover a baking tray with a large sheet of greaseproof paper.
2. Wash and dry your apples and insert thicken wooden skewers, lollipop sticks or chopsticks into each apple.
3. Combine the water, sugar and vinegar in a small heavy based pan.
4. Bring the mixture to the boil and add the food colouring if you\'re using it.
5. Heat the mixture to 150C and simmer for about 20 mins. If you don\'t have a sugar thermometer then just test the mixture after 20 mins by dropping a spoonful into a cup of cold water. The mixture should become hard and will crack when you tap it with the back of a metal spoon.
6.Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to stop bubbling before dipping the apples, one by one, into the mixture (you\'ll need to tilt the pan a little).
7. Rotate the apple, letting it drain a little then place on the greaseproof paper to cool down and harden.

Thanks Jamie. These worked perfectly for our halloween party. We even used green food die for the green apples which looked just as good as your red ones!

I made this recipe today. This will be my second time, trying to make toffee apples for my children. My toffee apples came out so nicely. They look just as smooth and glossy red as yours. I am so glad and thank you for your recipe. I will surely use it again.

@paddy the sugar becomes insanely hot. If it makes contact with skin it will cause a horrendous burn resulting in pain and possibly scarring. It could be potentially disastrous if a child hurts themselves with molten sugar. Just let them choose the food colouring or something.

does it have to be white vinegar or does anyone know if you will get the same effect using normal vinegar please?

Hi, you could make them with chocolate also. Golden Delicious work best for this. Just heat some cooking chocolate and dip the apples into the melted chocolate, as you would with toffee apples. At this stage you can sprinkle some hundreds and thousands on, for presentation. Leave them to cool on greaseproof paper.

ruth...yes you can ...i would use 'Couverture' chocolate for this recipe which is good for coating things with..you should be able to find it in the supermarket (baking section).

hi joudie..i've never had to store them as they disappear like hot cakes in our house lol..i guess they should keep for at least a day or two though..you could wrap them in clear plastic (like sweet paper) and no they won't melt :)
