Kids cook-off in East London

Jamie’s Ministry of Food Stratford has been helping to spread the message of good food with a live Cook-off between local primary school children.

The Cook-off took place in the Ministry’s training kitchen in East Ham Leisure Centre. All the children, who are in years 5 and 6, received a hands-on cooking workshop, which included preparing a delicious vegetarian fajita as well as fun food tasting experiments. The children were then challenged to create and submit a recipe for a delicious meal for four people, costing less than £5. Recipes had to be simple to make and not involve too much sugar or salt.

Carlos Montes from the Ministry of Food said: “The children presented fantastic recipes, some of which included very persuasive pitches and even a short film!”

He continued: “The competition between the five schools was fierce, all the children cooked like real master-chefs and the event was even filmed by a team from Al Jazeera TV!”

After much deliberation, the Chicory Pasta from Hartley School narrowly defeated the Chickpea Nuggets from Vicarage.

Jamie said: “I’m glad the kids enjoyed this, it sounded brilliant and I wish I could have been there. Making good food cooked from scratch fun and involving for children is a great way to secure their relationship with what they eat; this will make for healthier, happier adults.”
