Story by Micheal Hickey
Our friends at Eurofrutta have been supplying fresh produce for all of the Supper Clubs that we have been running for last year's New York marathon runners. Without fail our order of lovely fresh produce has arrived on time for the event which has meant that more of the profits from the Supper Clubs can be donated back to the Jamie Oliver Foundation. I caught up with Michael from Eurofrutta recently to find out a bit more about them.
What is the history of Eurofrutta?
Eurofrutta was set up in the sixties by the owners father, Bruno. Bruno came from near Milan in Italy, he traveled to the UK and worked in the restaurant trade in London, on the floor and in the kitchen. He developed contacts and decided to start from the back of a van. The business has been very successful ever since, under careful, shrewd management by Danny and his father. Bruno is no longer with us but the business continues to grow, organically and sustainably as a tribute to his memory.
Who runs it?
Danny Fulgoni is the owner. He worked in tandem with his father for nearly 20 years before Bruno passed away.
Tell me a bit about Eurofrutta
Eurofrutta is a family run business employing 18 staff based in the hub of London's market's, New Covent Garden. We deliver fresh produce to London's catering industry. That can be schools, restaurants, hotels, event catering, local government and so on. Whether by design or good fortune we have a very sound, sustainable business with great customers and we feel positive about the outlook for future growth.
Who do you supply to?
We supply companies as large as Patisserie Valerie down to small coffee shops all over London.
Where does your produce come from?
We have building relationships with growers and importers from Italy as well as relationships with farmers in the UK.
Tell us how you got involved with Fifteen?
We got involved with Fifteen through a request from some food bloggers who were cooking at a Supper Club to raise money for the Jamie Oliver Foundation 2011 marathon runners. We provided the fresh produce for the Supper Club and since then we have continued to do this.
Have you been to a Fifteen Supper Club yourself?
I have been to the Supper Club myself, thanks to a kind invite from Danny. I brought three of my friends and said it was the best Sunday she'd had out ever! The food was great and I really enjoyed seeing the apprentices and graduates from Fifteen cooking at the event as well.
What did you think?
I loved it. Each chef talks through what we are about to eat, the inspiration, the concept, all the time building the anticipation. And then the food was amazing, everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The afternoon flew by.
Anything else you would like to add?
Yes, good luck with future events, we will continue to support the good work that Fifteen does and lets hope there will be plenty more Supper Clubs in 2012.
Thank you to everyone at Eurofrutta.
