How to cut a mango

A sweet and juicy tropical fruit, we all love mangos. Sometimes called the ‘king of the fruits’, they are both delicious and versatile – perfect for throwing into salads, on top of yoghurt, or adding some sweetness to stir-fries and curries.

Mangos are high in vitamin C, which has lots of benefits, including keeping our immune system in tip-top condition to help us fight illness. Just two slices (about 5cm wide) count as one portion of your 5-a-day, making them a great addition to a healthy, balanced diet.

The tough skin and long, flat pip can make mangos a little tricky to tackle at home, but follow our step-by-step guide on how to slice a mango you’ll be a pro in no time.

You’ll need:

  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Sturdy glass (optional)
  1. The most important thing is to buy a good, ripe mango.
  2. Put the flat side of the mango onto the chopping board.
  3. Cut into the mango on one side until you hit the oval pip in the middle.
  4. Feather out the knife as you cut down, following the shape of the pip and cut one slice off. Cut into 3 slices, then repeat on the other side.
  5. You now have two options for how to peel a mango:
Option 1: Place the tip of the knife underneath the skin at one end of the slice. Gently roll the slice and carefully move the knife along to remove the skin. Option 2:  Get yourself a sturdy glass. Place the mango slice on the rim of the glass between the flesh and the skin. Push the slice down the glass to remove the skin.
  6. Cut the mango into chunks or slices.

Tip: Once you have removed the sides, you’re left with the flesh around the pip. To remove this, take the end of the mango off and place the knife between the skin and the flesh. Roll the pip until you’ve taken all the skin off – that’s a special treat for the chef!
